Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

We know there are areas where the website does not meet accessibility standards and we have a plan to address each of them:

1. Links Must Have Discernible Text

• We intend to ensure that all links have meaningful and visible text or accessible labelling using attributes such as aria-label or aria-labelledby. Additionally, we will add descriptive title attributes where necessary, improving accessibility for screen readers.

2. Headings Are Not in the Correct Order

• We intend to restructure the headings in a logical and sequential order, starting with <h1> and progressing hierarchically. This will enhance the navigation experience for users relying on assistive technologies.

3. Document Should Have One Main Landmark

• We intend to implement a clearly defined main landmark using ARIA roles, such as <main> or role="main">, ensuring a single, identifiable primary area for assistive technologies.

4. All Page Content Should Be Contained by Landmarks

• We intend to review and adjust the page structure to ensure all content is properly enclosed within recognised ARIA landmarks, such as <header>, <main>, <nav>, and <footer>, improving the semantic structure of the page.

5. Keyboard Navigation Not Highlighting Links

• We intend to investigate and rectify the lack of keyboard focus visibility on links by ensuring appropriate focus styles are applied consistently. This will enhance usability for keyboard-only users.

6. On 200%, Some Page Sections Are Cut Off

• We intend to ensure that the layout accommodates up to 200% zoom without cutting off any sections, by revisiting and testing the responsiveness of the page design.

7. On 400%, the Mobile Navigation Is Cut Off Half of the Way

• We intend to resolve issues with mobile navigation when viewed at 400% by improving the responsive design and ensuring all navigation elements remain fully visible and functional at high zoom levels.

8. Some Images Require ALT Attributes for Screen Readers

• We intend to audit and add meaningful ALT attributes to all images, providing accurate descriptions to enhance the experience for users relying on screen readers.

9. Navigable

• "For more information click here", "Click here", "here", "link" etc are used as both the visible and programmatic link phrase for a link on several pages. Links that don't adequately convey their purpose can make it difficult for people who use a screen reader to identify the direction of the link, unless they specifically backtrack and read around the link to ascertain its context. This fails WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 2.4.4 Link Purpose (In Context) (A). We plan to ensure the direction of all links on the website is clearly indicated.
• Some images on this website contain text - WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.4.5. or WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.1.1 (Non-text Content). We intend to review all of these images, and where possible will have converted them to accessible format, used a different visualisation method or added detailed description text to the page.
• The accessibility regulations do not require us to fix PDFs or other documents published before 23 September 2018. While there may be PDFs on the website, we want to reassure you that we no longer intend to use PDFs going forward. Any content we publish from now on will meet accessibility standards.
